Tenerife This Week: Carpets, Ballet & Bikes
The first week of June brings one of Tenerife's most cherished traditions — the spectacular Corpus Christi flower and sand carpets of La Orotava — alongside world-class ballet, a beloved island-wide bike festival, and enough live music, fiestas, and cultural happenings to fill every evening of your stay. Whether you're here for the culture, the community, or simply the sunshine, this is a week that delivers.
**HIGHLIGHTS**
Youth Carpet & Magos Dance – Corpus Christi in La Orotava (June 5–6, FREE)
Every year, the historic streets of La Orotava are transformed into open-air galleries as artisans lay intricate carpets made from volcanic sand, flowers, and seeds. On Thursday the 5th, the traditional Magos Dance fills the town with folklore and colour, and on Saturday the 6th, the Youth Carpet takes centre stage on Calle Grande. This is one of the Canary Islands' most iconic cultural spectacles — arrive early for the best views and bring your camera.
'Les Ballets de La Argentina' at the Auditorio de Tenerife (June 4, from €15)
Santiago Calatrava's iconic concert hall hosts an evening of elegant dance with Les Ballets de La Argentina. This acclaimed company brings Argentine tango and contemporary movement together on one of Spain's most striking stages. It's a rare chance to experience world-class performing arts in a truly unforgettable setting.
44th Bike Festival – Santa Cruz de Tenerife (June 6, FREE)
Now in its 44th edition, the Bike Festival is a beloved Santa Cruz tradition that floods the capital's streets with cyclists of all ages. It's free, family-friendly, and a wonderful way to see the city from two wheels. Arrive at the starting point early and soak up the festive, community atmosphere.
XXVIII FICMEC – Environmental Film Festival in Icod de los Vinos (from June 4)
One of Spain's longest-running environmental film festivals returns to the charming town of Icod de los Vinos, home of the ancient dragon tree. FICMEC screens international documentaries and features focused on nature and sustainability, with open-air screenings, workshops, and talks throughout the week. It's thought-provoking cinema in a stunning volcanic landscape.
**QUICK PICKS**
Suma Festival kicks off in Santa Úrsula on June 2 — a multi-day celebration of music and local culture in the green north. Dúo del Valle performs at the Auditorio de Tenerife on Tuesday (€15), followed by Variations on Canarian Themes on Friday as part of the university music festival. Catch a free Monday session of live music at Ann & Anna's Cafe or head to Charley at The Vault Bar in Los Cristianos for a relaxed evening out. For something offbeat, the improvised concert at Equipo PARA on Friday costs just €3. Games lovers can join Tuesday Games Afternoon at The Market Tavern, and on Thursday the same spot hosts a quiz and karaoke night. Feeling crafty? A beekeeping course on queen rearing launches Sunday in Santiago del Teide, while Granadilla de Abona rolls out new participatory culture workshops. Book lovers won't want to miss the launch of «Saberes y Sabores de Canarias» on Tuesday. And the Fiestas Mayores of Granadilla de Abona continue all week with traditional celebrations.
