Tenerife This Week: Street Art, Mahler & Magos
This first full week of May brings one of Tenerife's most vibrant cultural stretches of the spring. Festival Mueca transforms Puerto de la Cruz into an open-air stage, the Danzattack dance festival takes over El Sauzal, and live music ranges from Mahler symphonies to intimate jazz sessions. Whether you're here on holiday or calling the island home, there's something waiting for you every single day.
HIGHLIGHTS
Festival Mueca 2026 — Puerto de la Cruz (from May 7)
Puerto de la Cruz's beloved street arts festival returns, filling the town's plazas, seafront promenades and hidden corners with performers, installations and surprise encounters. Mueca is one of the Canary Islands' most original cultural events — think living statues, circus acts, theatre and visual spectacle spilling across an already-gorgeous Atlantic town. It's free, it's joyful, and it's absolutely worth the trip north.
Danzattack 2026 — Teatro El Sauzal (May 5–9)
El Sauzal's charming hillside theatre becomes the heart of contemporary dance this week. The festival unfolds across several days: CineDanza film screenings on Monday, workshops on Tuesday, professional dance showcases on Thursday, and the XVI National Urban Dance Championship on Saturday. If you've never visited Teatro El Sauzal, this compact gem overlooking the coast is reason enough to go.
Jazz in the Hall: "Heavy Weather" — Teatro El Sauzal (May 7, 8€)
Sandwiched into the Danzattack week, this Jazz in the Hall session pays tribute to Weather Report's legendary 1977 album. At just 8€ in an intimate setting, it's one of the best-value live music nights on the island. Arrive early and grab a drink — these evenings sell out quickly.
Baile de Magos de El Chorrillo (May 9) — Plaza San Isidro
Saturday evening brings one of Tenerife's most beloved traditions: the Baile de Magos, where locals dress in traditional Canarian peasant costume and dance the night away in the plaza. It's authentic, festive and wonderfully welcoming to newcomers. Come dressed up if you dare — nobody will mind.
'The Firebird' — Auditorio de Tenerife (May 8)
Stravinsky's blazing orchestral masterpiece comes to Santa Cruz's iconic concert hall. The Auditorio de Tenerife is a destination in itself — Calatrava's swooping white architecture against the harbour is unforgettable — and a night of world-class music inside makes it even better.
QUICK PICKS
Quirino Awards Short Film Screening at TEA (May 5) showcases the best of Ibero-American animation. Bergman fans can catch "Summer Games (1951)" at Espacio La Granja on Wednesday. Arden Producciones brings "The Scent of Time" to both Adeje (May 8, 12€) and El Sauzal (May 9, 9€). Kids will love "Los Cuentos de Sira" in El Médano on Saturday — it's free. The XIII Clásicas Tertulias at the beautiful Convento Santo Domingo in La Laguna (May 8) offers free intellectual conversation in a historic setting. And for the active crowd, Saturday's Carrera San Matías is a local running race, while Sunday's Circular Route of Anaga offers a guided hike through one of Europe's most ancient laurel forests.
