What happens when a sculpture can be dressed? Where does a garment end and a work of art begin? Can a body be the support, the material, the space, and the subject of a sculpture? In Bajarse las bragas, Juana Fortuny places sculpture in unstable territory — between object and body, between garment and form. Juana Fortuny (Tenerife, 1971) holds a degree in Fine Arts from the Universidad de La Laguna. Since the late 1990s she has built a sustained and singular career within contemporary creation in the Canary Islands. Over more than two decades she has developed a distinctive visual language rooted in textiles, handcraft, and soft sculpture, exploring themes of the body, affect, intimacy, relationships, and fragility. Through meticulous processes of making, Fortuny has forged a practice in which textile transcends its role as support to become sculptural matter, body, and space of experience.
