about

A chance to discover honey — one of Tenerife's most singular and little-known gastronomic products. Tenerife's honeys hold a world of tradition and deep local roots, enriched by the aromas and flavours of the island's landscapes. From the lushness of the Valle de La Orotava to the explosion of retama broom on Las Cañadas del Teide, heather, chestnut, tajinaste, broom and countless other plant species grow across the island's hills and mid-altitude zones, providing bees with the nectar they need to produce these unique honeys. Over the centuries, Tenerife's beekeepers have crafted exceptional honeys with great skill — a tradition that lives on to this day. The honeys produced on Tenerife are distinctive thanks to the originality of the island's flora, full of singular species that make possible floral combinations found nowhere else in the world. Tenerife has more than 600 registered beekeepers, whose craft has been passed down through family tradition. They run small-scale operations producing high-quality artisan honeys. Through their careful work and management, they have preserved the full flavour, aroma and natural properties of their honeys, making them a truly unique gastronomic delight. Tenerife honeys with protected designation of origin must pass strict quality controls. The required physicochemical characteristics are: Hydroxymethylfurfural ≤ 20 mg/kg. Diastase activity ≤ 12 Schade units.
