The Golden Dragon. Ópera de Tenerife presents The Golden Dragon by Péter Eötvös as part of its pre-season programme, Ópera en minúscula. This opera is based on the play of the same name — a contemporary performative tragedy with a grotesque tone by Roland Schimmelpfennig, the most internationally produced living German playwright. It is a story with a powerful plot and sharp social critique, softened by intelligent humour. This staging is a new production by Auditorio de Tenerife, premiering at Teatro Leal. One night, in a multi-storey building: a young Chinese woman suffers severe toothache in the kitchen of the Thai-Chinese-Vietnamese fast food restaurant The Golden Dragon. She has no residency permit, no money, and cannot go to a dentist. She is also searching for her missing sister. Her co-workers decide to pull the tooth themselves. Her story intertwines with those of the many residents living in the building. Woven between scenes is the fable of the grasshopper — who saves nothing in summer — asking the ant to feed her through winter. The ant agrees, but first forces her to work for free, then into prostitution; the grasshopper endures until an old ant (the grandfather) tears off her antennae, and later a young ant (the boyfriend) causes her serious harm.
