Pedro, a Rebellion of Silences - Teatro Leal

Pedro, a Rebellion of Silences. Taking as its starting point the tribute held on 19 September 1980 by the collective La Joven Poesía Canaria at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Santa Cruz de Tenerife — with the participation of Domingo Pérez Minik and Eduardo Westerdahl — this production sets out to resolve the apparent contradiction between the words rebellion and silences, which together define the poet and form part of one of his own verses. The show is conceived as an immersion in his work and in the key historical episodes in which he played a part: his social and political commitment against local caciquismo through his work as a journalist and public official during the Republic; his active involvement in the artistic avant-garde; his harrowing experiences as a prisoner during the Civil War; his enforced silence during the Francoist repression; and, finally, his role as a civic and human model during the early transition to democracy. Divided into four chronobiographical sections, the work offers a dramatic distillation of a life devoted to the word and its power to liberate the men and women of these islands — a life shaped by the view of the sea and driven by a universalist vocation.
