Bajada del Socorro, Güímar Festivities 2026

The feast of Nuestra Señora del Socorro in Güímar is one of the oldest romerias in the Canary Islands. It includes a procession from the Iglesia de San Pedro to the chapel at El Socorro, a re-enactment of the apparition of the Virgin at Chimisay, and the return 'subida' over two consecutive days — all part of an extensive programme of festivities spanning several days. 7 September (Bajada de la Virgen): The oldest romeria in the Canary Islands is celebrated, with the image of the Virgin carried down from the centre of Güímar to the chapel at El Socorro. The roughly 6-kilometre route follows the Camino del Socorro, with pilgrims, floats and music. In the afternoon, at El Socorro, the apparition of the Virgin to the Guanches on the beach of Chimisay is re-enacted. 8 September (Subida de la Virgen): The image of the Virgin returns in procession from the chapel of El Socorro to the Iglesia de San Pedro in the town centre. At La Asomada, the traditional game of ¡Pares o nones! begins.
