La Salita presents 'Selfi. Being Young in the Society of the Spectacle', a stage piece from the community project created by Juan Ayala and Miguel Oyarzun. Together they investigate what it means to be a teenager today and how this generation navigates a world of ever-multiplying screens — inside and outside school — constantly moving between reality and fiction. Book tickets online These public performances feature schoolchildren from across the island through a project run by the Education and Social Area. A talk-back with the audience will follow both performances. What does it mean to be a teenager in the society of the spectacle? What do adults actually know about them? What happens when they arrive at secondary school? How do they see themselves? In the workshop led by Juan Ayala and Miguel Oyarzun, a group of young people offers us a snapshot, a collective portrait, and a tutorial on their moment in life — an invitation to reflect. Guy Debord's 1967 text The Society of the Spectacle describes a society in which 'everything that was once directly lived has become mere representation.' That text suddenly feels contemporary again, challenging us to rethink what kind of society adults want to build and what we are offering — and imposing on — today's teenagers. If the world has become a representation, what better tool than theatre to shed new light on it?
